Tried those fancy expensive bread bags for a month then went back to regular zip locks and it's basically the same thing
I got suckered into buying a pack of those 'reusable bread bags' at the grocery store for like 12 bucks for 3 of them. Figured they'd keep my sandwich bread fresh longer. After a whole month of using them, my bread went stale just as fast as with the regular cheap zip lock bags I keep in the drawer. Actually maybe faster because the seal on one of them started failing after like 2 weeks. Total waste. The regular bags cost pennies each and do the exact same job. Has anyone else fallen for one of those 'specialty' kitchen products that turned out to be garbage?

Bread goes stale because of moisture loss, not because of the bag you use. The zip lock bags work just fine if you squeeze the air out before sealing them. Those reusable bags are just thicker plastic with a fancier design, they don't do anything special for keeping bread fresh. You basically paid 12 bucks for the same thing you already had in your drawer. Lesson learned, stick with what works.

okay but just because moisture loss is the culprit doesn't mean the material of the bag is irrelevant though. different plastics have different permeability rates and some are way better at keeping moisture in than others. i've actually tried those beeswax wraps and they kept my sourdough soft for like four extra days compared to a regular ziploc. and the reusable ones are thicker so they don't get those tiny microtears that let air sneak in over time. honestly the science behind it isn't just "all plastic is the same.
