Just realized that painting fence panels before putting them up saves zero time

I've seen guys at the yard painting whole panels flat on the ground thinking it's faster. But when you lift them, you always chip the paint, and fixing it takes longer than just painting after the fence is built. Am I the only one who thinks pre-painting is a total waste of effort?

Forgot to mention the paint waste from all those touch-ups.

Consider painting panels flat on the ground first. You cover everything evenly and avoid drips from brushing upwards. Lifting them can chip the edges, but a quick touch-up after is faster than painting the whole thing vertical. Painting an upright fence means missing spots and fighting gravity on every stroke. Pre-painting the main surfaces saves time during the build, even if you fix a few chips. It's not a total waste if you plan for the touch-up work.
