Honestly used to wing it all the time, thought marking was for bigger jobs. Tbh hitting a sprinkler line with a shovel changed my whole view real fast. Now the first thing I do is call 811, no matter how small the hole seems. That free paint is way cheaper than fixing a gas line or dealing with no internet for a week.

Remember when people would just plant trees without checking for pipes? My neighbor put a fence post right through his own cable line last year. How deep was that sprinkler line you hit?

What about when folks dig without checking and hit something bigger? My cousin once cracked a sewer line trying to plant a tree, and the cleanup was a nightmare.
