My old boss in Spokane had us set posts with a 4-inch gravel base, but I switched to 6 inches last year.

We had a whole row of cedar panels lean after a wet winter, and the inspector said our drainage was too shallow. Now I pack that extra gravel and haven't had a single call back. Anyone else make that change after a specific job?

So your old boss basically taught you to build on a sandcastle?

Yeah, that's basically how most companies run now.

Been there. You gotta find the solid ground first, even if it means redoing some work (annoying, I know). It saves a ton of trouble later.
