My son keeps begging to help with the floor nailer. How do I keep him safe?

My 14-year-old has been following me on jobs lately, and he's really into learning flooring. He watches every move I make with the nailer when we're putting down hardwood. Last week, he asked if he could try it himself, and I just froze. I let him handle the underlayment and some cutting, but the nailer feels like a big step. I want to support his interest, but the thought of an accident scares me. Other dads in the trade, how do you balance teaching your kids with keeping them out of harm's way? Our bond has grown through this, but I don't want to rush things and make a mistake.

You said the nailer feels like a big step, but is it really that bad? He's 14 and already helping with underlayment and cutting, so he's not clueless. If you teach him the right way and keep a close eye, he could probably use it safely. We let kids drive cars at 16, and that's way riskier than a nailer. Being too scared might just hold him back from learning something he's clearly into.

Man, that's a wild comparison. I saw a guy in his twenties put a nail through his own hand because he got distracted for half a second talking to his buddy. The car argument doesn't hold up for me. A fender bender is scary, but a nailer accident is instant and bloody. Some tools just demand a level of focus a kid's brain isn't wired for yet, no matter how smart they are with the prep work.
