Had a beer with a retired patternmaker from the old Ford plant who said 'we overcomplicate everything now with software before the sand even hits the box.' It's been stuck in my head for a week.

Reminds me of a carpenter I knew who would just eyeball cuts and they'd be perfect. Sometimes you just need the feel of the material, not a thousand digital checks. That old guy's point about the sand hits home.

My grandpa taught me to measure twice, cut once, but I get what you mean, @jason524. You can't beat that hands-on feel for the work.

Maybe that's why @jones.gray's grandpa's rule still works so well.
