My accountant in Austin said to invoice for half upfront, and it stopped the 'check is in the mail' problem cold.

I switched to this rule after a client ghosted me on a $2,000 project, and now I never start work without that first payment hitting my account.

That Austin accountant deserves a medal. I learned the same lesson the hard way with a freelance gig that left me hanging for months. Now my rule is simple, no money in the account means no pixels on the screen. It filters out the serious clients from the tire kickers pretty fast.

Amen to that, @cameron963, it's the only way to avoid the free sample crowd.
