My aunt told me I was crazy for buying whole chickens instead of just breasts

I used to ONLY buy chicken breasts on sale for like $3.99 a pound. My aunt watched me one time and said 'You're paying for bones and skin you don't even use? That's wild.' She showed me how to break down a whole chicken for $1.29 a pound at Aldi here in St. Louis. Now I get 2 meals from the meat plus 3-4 cups of broth from the carcass. I freeze the livers and hearts for my cats too so literally nothing goes to waste. Has anyone else switched to whole birds and actually tracked the savings per month?

and it's not just chickens either, I've noticed this whole pattern where we pay a premium for convenience without even thinking about it. once you start breaking down a whole bird you realize how much money you were throwing away on packaging and processing. same thing happens with pre-shredded cheese, bagged salad, those little single serve nut packs that cost ten times as much per ounce. it's like we've been trained to believe our time is worth more than the savings but honestly spending 10 minutes breaking down a chicken is not that hard. plus there's something kind of satisfying about using every part of it, makes you feel less wasteful and more connected to what you're eating.

Am I the only one who's bought pre-shredded cheese and then regretted it when it clumps together like a science experiment gone wrong?
