Digging through my old boxes, I found a gadget review from 1998. The DEPTH they covered was UNREAL compared to today.

I read a 1997 review for the PalmPilot that had three pages just on the graffiti handwriting system. Today's reviews just say 'the stylus works' and move on. My own tech takes are so basic, I called a smartwatch review done because it told the time. They used to test every feature in real life. Now it's all specs and quick looks. I miss when they actually used the stuff for weeks before writing.

Yeah, that bit about using stuff for weeks first hits hard. Why did we all decide specs on a page matter more than how something feels to live with? Reading a list of numbers tells me nothing about if a gadget will be annoying in two days. I really miss knowing if a battery actually lasts or if a feature is just junk you'll never touch.

My friend's 2002 MP3 player review was so thorough.
