Hot take: I picked a $400 used glory hole over a new one for my home studio

My old one cracked last month, and the choice was a new one for $1200 or a used one from a shop closing in Portland. I went with the used one, cleaned it up, and it's been running perfectly for six weeks now. Has anyone else had good luck with used gear, or is it always a gamble?

Oh man, @graceprice is right about the deep clean being key... I'd be way too scared to plug in used gear without taking it apart first. That $800 you saved is huge though, makes the risk worth it.

Totally get that, used gear is such a win. Snagged a beat up ribbon mic for nothing at a pawn shop and it sounds amazing after a deep clean.

Opening up a ribbon mic is a special kind of scary. The ribbon itself is basically a piece of foil, one wrong move and you've got a very expensive paperweight. A little isopropyl alcohol and a gentle hand goes a long way though. I've found that taking photos of every step before you start is the only way I don't end up with extra screws on the table. Some pawn shop finds just need a little love to sound better than something brand new. Worth the shaky hands.
