Bonding with a hiker made me wander off the marked path

Honestly, how risky is it really to step off the path for a minute during a good chat? Most people hike on pretty basic trails, not the side of a cliff. You might just walk a few extra feet into some trees, not into a survival situation. It feels like common sense keeps you safe more than staying on a painted line (you know, unless you're way out in actual wilderness). Getting a little turned around just makes for a better story later.

Sounds like you got so into debating the best trail snack you wandered into a different area code. I mean, next time maybe try bonding over a map instead of your deep love for granola bars. Could have ended up following your new best friend right off a cliff.
