Went to a coffee shop downtown and saw a whole new kind of comic fan

I was grabbing a drink at The Daily Grind on 5th Street yesterday, and I saw this older guy, maybe in his 60s, sitting alone. He was just quietly reading a trade paperback of 'The Dark Knight Returns'. No phone, no laptop, just him and the book. It really hit me how different that felt from my usual comic experience, which is mostly scrolling through news sites or arguing online about movie casting. This guy was just fully into the story, the art, everything. He even had a little notebook next to him where he'd jot something down sometimes. It made me realize how much of being a 'fan' for me is about the chatter and hype, and not just the actual comics. I felt kinda jealous of his focus, lol. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you see someone enjoying comics in a totally different, maybe more pure way?

PSA: Don't trust the 'dark sky' map near a new housing development

I drove out to a spot near the new Oakwood Estates in Shelbyville last weekend, based on a light pollution map I checked. The map still showed it as a dark green zone, perfect for viewing. Got there at 10 PM, set up my 8-inch Dob, and within 20 minutes, security lights from a dozen new houses just over the hill flooded the whole area. Couldn't see the Milky Way at all, which was the whole point. The maps aren't updating fast enough for new construction. Has anyone found a better way to check if a spot is actually still dark before making the drive?

Showerthought: everyone swears by magnesium floats for a slick finish, but I'm sticking with my wood

Had a big pour for a garage floor in Springfield last Tuesday, about 40 yards. My crew was all set to use the magnesium float, saying it's the only way to get that perfect, smooth surface. I told them to hand me the wood float instead. They thought I was nuts. The wood takes more passes and you gotta keep it damp, but I find it gives me way more control over the cream. With magnesium, I feel like it's too easy to overwork it and pull up fines, especially in this heat. We finished the whole slab, and the client called yesterday raving about how flat and even it turned out, no crazing at all. So yeah, I get the hype, but sometimes the old way works better for the hand you have. Anyone else still using wood for their final finish?
