Can we talk about that coffee shop in Portland that uses gift card profits for employee healthcare

I overheard the owner at a workshop in Seattle explain how they put 5% of every gift card sold into a health fund, and now I'm doing the same for my side hustle team of 3 people - has anyone else tried this model?

Jade738 really changed my mind on the free money angle here.

Here's the problem nobody's talking about. Gift cards are basically free money for most businesses because a good chunk never get redeemed. So taking 5% from that and calling it healthcare funding is a nice story but it's not actually costing the business anything real. If you're a side hustle with 3 people, you better be tracking how many cards actually get used versus how many people are sitting on them not spending. Because if your redemption rate is high, that 5% might not even cover one doctor visit.
