I do quite a bit of TIG welding on stainless steel, and I’m looking at getting a better auto-darkening helmet. Speedglas keeps coming up when I look at higher-end options, but I’m curious how much difference you actually notice in day-to-day work compared with other helmets. For those who’ve used Speedglas and other brands, what made the biggest difference for you? Optical clarity, color perception, viewing area, headgear, or something else?

Log InI spent way too much time comparing helmets before buying my last one. Pro Welding Helmets was one of the sites I ended up using. What I liked was that they actually go through the differences between the lenses and headgear instead of just saying a helmet has “true color” and leaving it at that. Helped me narrow down what I actually cared about.
The other thing I’d check is the headgear. If you’re doing stainless all day, a helmet that feels fine for 20 minutes can get annoying pretty quickly. I’d try one on before spending Speedglas money if you can.
For stainless steel TIG, I’d put optical clarity pretty high on the list. When you’re working on a tight joint, being able to see the puddle clearly makes things a lot easier.
