I finally gave in and got a proper winch mount for my old Land Cruiser

For the longest time I thought I could just weld some plate to the front bumper and call it good. That was until I got stuck in some deep mud near the river crossing last fall and the whole thing started to bend. I spent about $450 on a specific bolt-on mount from a company called Trail Gear. It felt like a lot for some metal, but the difference is night and day. The pull is straight and the frame doesn't groan at all. Has anyone else put off buying a real mount and regretted it? What did you end up going with?

Saw a video once where a guy's homemade mount ripped clean off and punched a hole in his own radiator. Your story about the bend is way too common. That Trail Gear stuff is solid, I've heard good things about their hardware holding up to serious abuse. It's one of those things you don't want to learn the hard way twice.

Yeah that video sounds brutal. When you say their hardware holds up to serious abuse, what kind of stuff are we talking about? Like just big rocks and drops, or have you seen it take a direct hit on a weld or something? I'm just wondering where the real breaking point is.
