TIFU by testing my flex on a stump at an OHV park in Tillamook
I was at the Tillamook State Forest OHV area last weekend showing off my new long arm kit to a couple guys I met in the lot, and I picked what looked like a harmless little stump to climb for a quick flex shot. The stump was rotten, my front tire punched straight through it, and I sat there high centered for 40 minutes while a guy in a bone stock Tacoma with all terrains drove past and asked if I needed a strap. Now I walk the whole obstacle on foot before I touch it, so what's your dumbest "that looked easy" moment and how bad was the recovery?
The part nobody ever brings up is that rotten wood is way more dangerous than a rock because it gives zero warning before it fails. A rock either moves or it doesn't, but a stump like that looks solid until your whole tire is inside it and now you're resting frame deep on a pile of mush. My worst one was a "small" log crossing that turned out to be hollow and I dropped my diff right onto it, took two rigs and a hi lift to get me off. What really gets me is how the terrain around Tillamook stays wet almost year round, so stuff that looks fine is often halfway to dirt already. Walking it first is smart, but also poke it with a stick or stomp it, because some of those stumps are just bark holding hands with air.
