Spent 11 hours trying to get Whisper to transcribe my grandma's old cassette tapes
I found a box of 14 cassettes in my grandma's basement in Toledo and thought OpenAI's Whisper would knock them out in an afternoon. Nope. The hiss and the low volume made it spit out garbage, so I ended up running everything through Audacity first with noise removal, then splitting files under 25MB, then redoing it all because I forgot to set the language to English. Total time was closer to 11 hours for maybe 90 minutes of actual audio. Is there a better free tool for cleaning up old tape recordings before I feed them in, or am I stuck doing it by hand?
