Burnt my hand bad on an air fryer basket - check your handles

I was at my buddy's place in Phoenix last Saturday making wings in his air fryer. When I pulled the basket out the handle felt cool for a second then got scorching hot out of nowhere. Burned two fingers pretty good and dropped the whole thing on his tile floor. Turns out the silicone grip slipped off the metal part and I grabbed right where it was exposed. Now I check every air fryer handle before I use one, especially if it's been running awhile. Anyone else ever have a handle fail on them like this?

Yeah those silicone grips are junk, I wrap a dish towel around the handle every time now.

Count me in on team towel wrap, @tarajenkins. Honestly, part of me wonders if the heat just cooks the silicone faster, making it way more slippery than a bare handle.
