Warning: learned at a training in Columbus that a 15 year old panel can eat a new keypad's battery in under 12 months
The instructor pulled a keypad from his truck with a bulged battery and told us mismatched draw is behind half the dead keypads he swaps. How do you guys catch that before charging the customer for a whole new system?
Heard this same story at a training years back and honestly I'm not sold on it being as common as they make it sound. Think about it, a keypad pulls barely any current when it's just sitting there idle, so a panel would have to be drawing a crazy amount to kill a fresh battery in under a year. Maybe that instructor had one bad batch or a sketchy panel and turned it into a whole rule. What I'd actually do is throw a meter on the keypad circuit and check the draw before blaming the panel, takes two minutes and saves you from selling a system nobody needs. Most dead keypads I pull are just old and tired, not some mismatched panel slowly eating them alive. Not saying it can't happen, but I'd want to see real numbers before I believed it's behind half the swaps.
