Hot take: the Balloon Fiesta is better from the dirt lot off Alameda than from the park
Everyone keeps saying you have to get inside the park at 4am and fight 80,000 people for a spot, and I did that for years. Two Octobers ago a guy at the dirt lot off Alameda near the north end of the field waved me into a $20 spot and I watched the balloons launch right over my head with my own coffee and a folding chair. Inside the park you're staring up at balloons through a sea of phones and strollers, but out there I could hear the burners and actually walk around. Last year I got there at 5:30, paid my $20, and had a better morning than any year I paid for the shuttle. Does anyone else skip the park or am I the odd one out here?
I've noticed this same thing with concerts and festivals, the free spot on the hill behind the venue always beats fighting the crowd inside. Paying less and skipping the lines just makes the whole thing more fun, it's like a cheat code for life.
