I used to clean pottery shards with a toothbrush for hours, now I just use a soak in diluted vinegar

A few months back I was working on a dig in New Mexico and I was spending like 45 minutes per piece scrubbing off clay and caliche with an old toothbrush. It was killing my hands and taking forever. Then one of the field techs said I should try a 10% vinegar soak for maybe 15 minutes first. I thought it might damage the surface, but I tested it on a broken piece of plainware we already had catalogued. The caliche just crumbled off after, and I only had to do a light rinse under water. Now I do that for any sherd with heavy buildup, and I cut my cleaning time by over half. Has anyone else tried using mild acid for cleaning finds, or do you stick to mechanical methods?

3 years of worm bin trials finally paid off last week

I started a worm bin in my Brooklyn apartment back in 2021 and it was a stinky mess for so long. Last week I opened it up and there was ZERO smell just nice earthy dirt. I switched to adding more shredded paper and less citrus peels about 6 months ago and that did the trick. Has anyone else had luck balancing their worm bin with a specific ratio?

That number is way higher than I expected, especially because most of the time we blame the box itself. Overheard a couple at the hostel in Lisbon talking about how they got a full refund on a non-refundable booking.

They called the hotel directly, not the booking site, and just asked nicely if they could move the date due to a 'family thing.' The manager said yes and switched it, no fee. Pro tip: skip the foam brushes for poly, a cheap china bristle brush is a total game changer

I was finishing a big oak table last month and decided to test both. The foam brush left a million tiny bubbles in the first coat that I had to sand out, adding like 2 hours to the job. The $8 china bristle brush from the hardware store laid it down smooth and even every single time. It held more finish so I could work faster, and the final coat looked like glass. I'm never going back to foam for top coats. What's your go-to brush for water-based stuff, since bristle can be tricky with those?
