Paid $180 for a swamp cooler tune-up, should have just watched a video
Our swamp cooler was rattling something fierce last May, so I called a local outfit off Nextdoor and they charged $180 to replace the belt and bearings. It worked fine for about two weeks, then the motor seized up on a 98 degree Saturday. I bought a $45 motor from Grainger on San Mateo, watched a 12 minute YouTube video, and had it running by dinner. Anyone else in Albuquerque getting hosed on basic cooler maintenance when the parts are cheap and the work is simple?

This kind of thing is everywhere now, not just with coolers. It's the same story with plumbers, AC guys, appliance repair. They know most folks won't bother learning the job, so the price has nothing to do with the actual work anymore. Parts are cheap and the videos are free, but somehow a two hour service call runs you $200 plus. Same thing happened to me with a dishwasher that just needed a $12 drain pump, quoted $350 to fix it.
