Just learned the Commodore 64 had a built-in BASIC interpreter that took up only 9K of ROM

I was reading a coding manual from 1982 and it blew my mind that they crammed a whole programming language into less space than a single MP3 file takes today. Anyone else ever dig into the technical specs of old hardware and get surprised by what they pulled off?

Learned the hard way about headspace in my kraut crock

Kept getting mold on top of my sauerkraut for like 4 batches straight. Couldn't figure out why until I saw a post saying you need at least 2-3 inches of headspace in the crock. I was cramming it full to the brim every time. The brine would overflow when I pressed it down and leave the top exposed. Switched to leaving more room and my last batch came out perfect, no mold at all in 6 weeks. Anyone else have trouble with their crock size and headspace?

Heat soak ruined my pour last Tuesday

Guy at the supply shop told me I wasn't letting my ladle cool long enough between heats. Now I'm wondering how many bad castings I chalked up to bad sand mix.

That whole 'learn HTML first' advice feels backwards to me

I was at a coding meetup last Thursday and this guy kept saying beginners have to master HTML before touching anything else. Been coding for 6 months now and I learned JavaScript alongside HTML from day one, and it worked fine for me. Telling people they gotta spend months on markup before making anything interactive just kills their motivation. My first project was a dice roller that changed numbers on click, and I learned both tags and functions at the same time. Anyone else jump into JavaScript early and feel like it made more sense?

Last Tuesday my workbench drawer fell off the slider rails for the 3rd time...

I was tightening a clamp and the whole drawer just dropped to the floor with a crash. First time I just hammered the rail back straight but it only held for like a week. Second time I tried some epoxy on the bracket and that snapped clean off too. Finally on Tuesday I got smart and drilled new holes to reposition the rail mount about 2 inches back. Has anyone else had luck with reinforcing those cheap drawer sliders with extra screws?

Had to choose between softwood and hardwood for a client's shelves in Austin

Client wanted shelves for their living room and I had to pick clear pine or red oak. Pine was way cheaper at $3 a board foot but oak had that grain they wanted. I went with oak and the staining took forever but they tipped me $50 extra after seeing the final look. Anyone else ever get stuck between budget and what a client really wants?

My favorite brush handle broke mid-job last Tuesday

I was working a chimney in Bakersfield when my trusty fiberglass rod snapped in half after just three years of use. Cheap plastic ferrule gave out, and I spent an hour fishing the brush out of the flue with a shop vac and a bendy wire. Anybody else stopped trusting those budget rod kits from the hardware store?

That fancy $200 band saw blade sharpener I bought

Back around 2015 I dropped about $200 on one of those electric band saw blade sharpeners you see in catalogs. Thought it would pay for itself in a year since I was sending blades out to a shop in Pittsburgh every few months. But honestly the thing never got the teeth consistent enough and I ended up snapping three blades in two weeks. I went back to the old hand file method my grandpa taught me. Has anyone else tried one of those machines and had it actually work out?

Swapped thermal paste on my old laptop after 4 years

I was about to buy a new laptop because it kept overheating and shutting down during Zoom calls... but I saw a before/after temperature difference of 15 degrees on a forum post. A $7 tube of Arctic Silver and 20 minutes of work turned my 2019 Dell into something usable again. Has anyone else tried this on a really old machine?
