Paid $220 to reseal my driveway, contractor used a cold mix instead

Hired a guy off Craigslist last month to reseal my driveway before monsoon season. He quoted $220 including labor, seemed like a solid deal. Showed up with a trailer and did the whole thing in about an hour. Looked great for like two weeks, then the first good rain came and it started flaking off in chunks. Turns out he used cold mix patch instead of proper sealant, which is about half the price per gallon. My neighbor walked over and pointed it out immediately, said the texture was off. Now I'm looking at another $400 plus to have it stripped and done right. Anyone else get burned by a too-good price on driveway work around here? How do you vet these guys without getting ripped off?

Craigslist is a gamble where every once in a while you win a free couch, but mostly you lose 220 bucks on driveway soup. The guy probably thought "cold mix" just meant he should wear a jacket while he worked. Man, on the bright side, at least he didn't use chocolate pudding, which might've held up better in the rain. For real though, next time ask to see the actual bucket before they pour anything, and if the price sounds too easy, it's because the job is gonna be hard on your wallet later. Hope your neighbors don't start calling your place the gravel pit anytime soon.
