The old man at the La Montañita counter in Nob Hill paid for my groceries and I can't stop thinking about it
Last Tuesday I ran in to grab a few things before my shift and my card got declined at the register, which was embarrassing enough with a line behind me. The guy next to me, maybe 70, just quietly slid his card over and said, "Don't make it weird, I've been there." It came to $34, and when I tried to get his number to pay him back he just waved me off and left. What got me is he didn't make a show of it at all, no lecture, no story about his hard times. I've been on night shifts at the hospital for 6 months now and I think it's made me forget that most people are just decent. Where do you all run into folks like that around here, because it sure wasn't at the Smith's on Tramway.
