I refused to touch solid state amps until a repair guy in Portland showed me his bench last Tuesday
Three years ago I swore I would only ever work on tube gear because solid state just felt like cheating to me. Last Tuesday a repair guy in Portland named Dale pulled a 1978 Marantz off his shelf and walked me through a dead channel in about 20 minutes, and I finally got why he likes working on them. Anyone here made that same switch, and what sold you on it?

Dale's a solid name for a repair guy, but 20 minutes for a dead channel on a Marantz is quick even for someone who's done it a hundred times. Most of that stuff is just cold solder joints or a blown output, so once you know where to look it's not really magic. Tube gear still sounds better though, I'm not giving that up.
