My 3 years of guessing lens focus finally ended with a $4 ground glass from a camera shop in Tucson

I used to just eyeball focus on my old medium format camera, then take a shot and hope for the best. Most rolls came back with soft pics and I blamed the lens or the film. Last month a guy at a repair shop in Tucson told me to tape a piece of ground glass to the film plane and look through the back with a loupe. Worked way better than I expected. No more wasted rolls or mystery results. Anyone else do this with a homemade setup or should I just buy a proper focusing screen next time?
