A guy at the bookstore in Portland pointed out the manga shelf is organized by publisher, not author, and that explains so much
I was at a used bookstore in Portland last weekend looking for volume 3 of a series and couldn't find it anywhere near the first two. A guy working there saw me searching and said the whole manga wall is sorted by publisher, not by title, so volumes get split across the store. I checked and he was totally right, my series was split between two different shelves because two companies printed it. Has anyone else run into this? It made me want to just order online but I still grabbed two volumes.
That happened to me at Powell's on Burnside maybe two years ago and I spent like 25 minutes walking the same aisles. I was hunting for volume 4 of a series and the first three were all lined up nice, then the rest were way over by the art books because a different company picked it up later. I asked a worker and she said yeah, the sections are by publisher so it's easier for them to restock, which makes sense from their side but is a total nightmare when you're just trying to find one book. I wound up buying the wrong volume twice because of it, which was my own fault for not checking the spine close enough. Now I just check the publisher name on my phone before I go in so I know which wall to start at, saves me a ton of time. Sorry that happened to you too, it's such a dumb way to set up a store.
