Subbed purist until a fan edit with subs changed my whole take

Someone on a forum pointed out the official subs flatten all the honorifics and jokes into bland English, and after I watched that fan edit that keeps the '-kun' and '-senpai' bits, I can't go back to the official release for older shows like Gintama.

Fan edits can be a nice change of pace but calling the official subs bland seems like a stretch. A lot of those jokes and honorifics do not carry over cleanly into English, and when translators try to force them in you end up with clunky lines that pull you right out of the scene. The official releases also have to work for a much wider crowd, not just the people who already know what senpai means. Gintama specifically leans hard on wordplay that barely survives translation no matter who does it, so a fan edit keeping the Japanese terms does not fix the actual jokes. Enjoy the fan edit if it clicks for you, but acting like the official version is unwatchable now feels like a bit much.
