Vent: My local anime club's 'discussion' last month was just people listing their favorite shows

I mean, we spent 45 minutes in a library meeting room and nobody actually debated anything, it was just a rec list. Has anyone else's group had this problem and how do you fix it?

Totally get that... feels like a wasted meetup. We had the same issue and switched to themed nights, like "best fight scene" or "worst filler arc." Forces people to explain their picks and actually talk about why something works or doesn't.

Oh man, I gotta push back on this one! I actually think just listing favorites can be a really solid way to find new stuff and bond with people. Sometimes you don't need deep analysis, you just want to holler "Cowboy Bebop!" and have five people nod along. If you force debate prompts every time, it can feel like school instead of a hangout. Maybe the real issue is the club needs a mix, not a full overhaul.

Yeah that's the worst. We started using specific debate prompts, like "is this character actually a good person" or "which studio ruined this adaptation". Forces people to pick a side.
