Bought a $70 countertop composter gadget, it turned my kitchen scraps into a wet mush pile in 9 days
Saw one of those electric countertop composters online and figured it would fix my fruit fly problem for good, so I dropped $70 on it back in March. Followed the booklet exactly, ran it every night, and by day 9 the bin was just warm mush that smelled like old soup. Turns out those things don't really compost, they just dry and grind scraps, so I still had to haul everything to the drop off two miles away. Save your money and get a $15 bokashi bucket or just a sealed bin with a carbon filter instead. Did any of you get suckered into one of these too?
Nine days of running a motor every night just to make soup is the part that gets me. You're paying for the electricity on top of the $70, and for what, warm goo that still has to go in the car? A plain bucket with a lid and some shredded paper does the same job, minus the plug and the smell. My setup was a five gallon pail from the hardware store and a handful of browns every time I added scraps, and it never once smelled like old soup. The gadget just adds a step to a thing that was already simple.
