Changed my mind about worm bins after visiting a friend's place in Portland

She had a two-tier Worm Factory 360 in her kitchen corner with zero smell and I saw her toss in banana peels and coffee grounds right at breakfast, so I finally bit the bullet on a small setup of my own - anyone else get convinced after seeing one in action?

Did your friend use those charcoal filter mats or something else to keep the smell down? I kept putting off getting a worm bin because every video I watched made it look complicated or stinky, but then I helped my neighbor harvest her castings last spring and it was just dirt and worms, no smell at all. That was the moment I caved and bought a cheap bin from the hardware store. It is way easier than I expected, I just throw in kitchen scraps and they disappear in a few days. The worst part was drilling the air holes but even that took ten minutes.

Yeah, just dirt and worms, no smell at all" is exactly what sold me too. I was so worried about the stink but my bin just smells like wet newspaper and soil, not gross at all. I drilled holes in a cheap plastic tote and honestly the hardest part was convincing myself to start, now I just toss scraps in and forget about it.
