My aunt swore by eggshells in the compost
She said they add calcium and stop the smell. I threw a dozen in and my whole kitchen reeked for a week. Did I do something wrong or is she just crazy?

Did you rinse the eggshells off before tossing them in? If you leave any egg white residue clinging to the shells, that protein rots and stinks up everything fast.

Crushing the shells first helps them dry out faster, which cuts down on the smell.

Agree with @aaron708 on rinsing, but honestly I think the smell thing is overblown. I toss shells in without rinsing all the time and it's fine if you bury them in the middle of the pile where the heat kills the rot. Maybe your kitchen compost bin just needed a better lid.
