Just realized my pour over was weak because I was grinding too coarse

A barista in Portland told me my grind looked like sea salt and should be more like fine sand. I switched to a finer setting on my Baratza Encore and got way more flavor. What's your go-to grind size for a V60?

My neighbor said my deep space photos were just 'pretty dots' and it got me thinking...

I was showing him a shot of the Orion Nebula I took from my backyard in Denver last month, and he shrugged and said, 'It's just a bunch of pretty dots, isn't it?' I tried explaining the scale and the gas clouds, but he didn't get it. Do you ever run into people who just don't see the point in what we're looking at?

Heard a guy at the Memphis in May contest say he hasn't touched a stick burner since 2015

He was talking to his buddy about how he only uses pellet grills now for consistency. It made me think about how much the competition scene has changed. I miss seeing the old school guys babysitting a fire all night, you know? Does anyone still run a traditional offset at the big contests, or is it all about the set-and-forget tech now?

A friend told me to skip the small talk at networking events and just ask for help

My buddy from the Corktown Business Association said, 'Don't waste time, just tell people what you need.' I tried it at a meetup in Midtown last week and it totally backfired, people just got awkward and moved on. Has anyone else found a better way to start a real conversation at these things?

The difference in my work after I finally started using a laser level

I used to think a string line and my eye were good enough for everything, especially on smaller jobs like garden walls. That changed last fall when I did a big patio extension in Cincinnati. The homeowner wanted a herringbone pattern with a tight joint, and my old way just wasn't cutting it. I borrowed a DeWalt laser level from a buddy and the first course I laid with it was a total game changer. The line was perfect, no sag, and I could check my work every five minutes. Over the two week job, I swear I saved at least a full day of tear-downs and re-dos. My joints were cleaner and the whole thing looked pro in a way my stuff didn't before. I bought my own the next week. Anyone else have a tool they resisted that completely changed their quality?

Back in 2012, I found a weird trick to actually find old forum threads about anime

I was looking for a specific debate about the ending of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' that I remembered reading years before. The old forum search was broken, and Google just showed new stuff. On a whim, I typed 'site:forumname.com "unit 01" before:2010' into Google, using the 'before' date filter. It pulled up a thread from 2008 I thought was gone forever. The trick was using Google's own tools to search inside the dead forum. Has anyone else found a good way to dig up those lost discussions?

A torque wrench check at the Denver hangar showed me I was off by 15 foot-pounds

I was doing a routine wheel change on a King Air last week and my new partner asked to double-check my torque. I was sure I had it right, but his wrench clicked at 15 foot-pounds less than mine. Turns out my wrench hadn't been calibrated in over two years and was giving false readings. Has anyone else had a tool calibration issue sneak up on them like that?

Spent a whole afternoon just getting the first course right on a curved garden wall

The homeowner wanted a gentle curve, but getting each brick to sit level and follow the line took forever... I think it was about five hours just for that base. How do you guys handle curved layouts without losing your mind?

PSA: My $1.50 bag of dried chickpeas turned into a kitchen flood

I decided to try cooking a huge batch from scratch to save money, but I forgot they expand a ton. I put two cups of dried ones in my regular pot with water, went to watch a show, and came back to find foam and water all over my stovetop in my apartment. Learned you need a much bigger pot and to watch them close at the start. Anyone have a good trick to stop the boil-over mess?

Honestly, I used to forge every knife with a 2-pound cross peen for an hour straight

Now I just use a 3-pound rounding hammer and get the same shape in 20 minutes after a smith in Austin showed me his technique. Anyone else switch up their primary forging hammer recently?
