Shoutout to my neighbor who told me to freeze my scraps before adding them to my bin

I was worried about fruit flies, but after trying her method for a week, my countertop bin has zero smell and the frozen scraps break down faster in my tumbler.

Frozen scraps are a total game changer. I started doing it last summer and my bin never gets gross or smelly anymore. It also helps kill any little eggs or larvae before they even get a chance to hatch. Plus the ice crystals break down the veggie skins so fast in my tumbler.

Not gonna lie @adams.vera, I think people make composting way more complicated than it needs to be. Honestly, a little smell or a few fruit flies never killed anyone, right? I just toss my scraps in the bin straight from the counter and it's fine. Maybe I'm lucky (or just don't care as much), but I've never had a problem that freezing would fix. It seems like extra steps for something that doesn't really need fixing. Plus, who's got freezer space for a bag of old carrot peels when you're trying to fit in a frozen pizza?

Wait, I think the freezing actually doesn't kill eggs or larvae since most can survive cold temps just fine. Tbh it's more about slowing down the decomposition and keeping smells away than anything else.
