Got called out for a 'haunted' dishwasher in a 1920s house in Savannah...

The owner said it would start a full cycle by itself at 3 AM, and I found a family of mice had built a nest in the control panel, their little feet hitting the start button. I cleaned it out and put down some traps, but the guy still swears he hears the rinse cycle kick on some nights. Ever had a critter cause a weird fault like that?

Honestly, is a ghost dishwasher even a bad thing? If it's running by itself at 3 AM, that's just free cleaning. Maybe the mice are just trying to help out. Old houses make all kinds of noises, so it's probably just the pipes or the floor settling. I'd take a self-starting appliance over a real problem any day.

Why do we always call free help a problem?

You're right about the free cleaning, webb.evan, but a ghost dishwasher means something is broken. That's not a feature, it's a short circuit waiting to happen. Water damage from a leak is way worse than a few weird noises. I'd be calling an electrician, not thanking the mice. Free help that could burn your house down isn't help at all.
