I almost walked past them thinking they were just old dishes. Now I always check the bottom of any glassware before I put it back.

Had a talk with my prep cook that changed how I plate pasta

My prep cook Maria looked at my spaghetti plating and said it looked like a nest. She showed me how she twirls the pasta around tongs before dropping it, getting a tight spiral that stands up. Tried it on Friday night and three customers actually complimented the presentation. Has anyone else gotten game-changing tips from their junior staff?

Just found out my local recycling center throws away half of what I sort

I was at the county drop off yesterday and asked the guy what actually gets recycled. He said only #1 and #2 plastics make it through, everything else goes to the landfill. That's like half the stuff I was carefully rinsing and sorting for the last 3 years. Found this out from a 2023 report the county put out that nobody reads. Has anyone else checked what their local facility actually accepts versus what they say they accept?

Pro tip: I chose a hand grinder over an electric one for my camping trip

I was packing for a week in the Smokies and had to pick between my big electric grinder or a small manual one. I went with the hand grinder, and the coffee was just as good without the noise or the bulk. Anyone have a favorite lightweight setup for making coffee outdoors?

A guy at the shop in Dayton said you can't teach an old dog new tricks about G-code

He was this older operator who refused to learn canned cycles, saying his way with longhand code was just as fast. I watched him spend 45 minutes writing a program I could do in 5 with a G71. Has anyone else run into this kind of stubbornness, and how do you handle it?

My $20 'phone in rice' kit actually saved my Pixel 6 after I dropped it in the sink

I was super skeptical when my friend gave me this little pouch of special drying beads instead of using rice, but after leaving my phone in it for 48 hours, it powered on like nothing happened. Ngl, I thought it was just a gimmick, but the silica gel stuff really pulled all the moisture out. Has anyone else tried one of these kits and had it work, or did I just get lucky?

Watched a guy in Tacoma cut a 45 with just a speed square and realized my miter saw setup was overkill for small trim.

I was adding crown molding in a 1920s bungalow and saw the finish carpenter mark and cut perfect angles in under 30 seconds without even plugging a tool in, so when do you all ditch the power for a hand tool on site?

Heads up about those cheap refractory bricks from that online auction site

I bought a pallet of 'factory surplus' bricks for $800 to patch our main furnace lining. They crumbled after two heats, and we had to shut down for a full day to redo the whole section with proper material. The downtime cost us way more than the bricks saved. Has anyone found a reliable supplier for decent budget refractories?
