Just counted the rings on that big oak we took down in Springfield

It was 142 years old, which really hit me. That tree started growing before my grandpa was even born, and we just took it down in a single afternoon. Makes you think about the history these things have seen, you know? Anyone else get that feeling when you check the age on a big removal?

Yeah, that "history they've seen" feeling gets me every time. I found a horseshoe nail in a maple we cut last fall, just rusted into the trunk. Makes you wonder about the guy who lost it.

Wait, the nail was inside the tree?

Had a walnut tree with a railroad spike buried about ten inches deep... somebody drove it in there a hundred years ago maybe. The tree just grew around it like nothing happened, bark all smooth over the top. Crazy what trees just absorb and keep growing.
