The $4 potato peeler that stopped my onion tears

I used to dread cutting onions for chili night, my eyes would water so bad I had to take breaks every few minutes. Last Tuesday I tried sticking the peeled onion in the freezer for 10 minutes before chopping, and it worked like magic. Has anyone else tested the freezer trick, or do you have a better way that doesn't involve goggles?
