Thought my cast iron was ruined after one night of leaving it wet, took me 3 weeks to fix it
So about 3 weeks ago I cooked up some sausage and peppers on my 10 inch Lodge, one of the ones you get at Target for like $25. Cleaned it, set it on the stove to dry, and then totally forgot about it. Woke up the next morning and there was a ring of orange rust right in the middle where the water pooled.
I figured it was done. Started looking at new ones online, even had one in my cart. My neighbor who does a lot of camp cooking said just scrub it with steel wool and re-season it. I did not believe him. I tried scrubbing with salt and oil first like I saw somewhere. Nope. Tried baking soda paste. Nope.
Finally got a $4 steel wool pad and went at it for maybe 10 minutes. Rust came right off. Then I did the whole oil and oven thing, 4 rounds at 450. Took me 3 weeks to just listen to the guy who told me on day one because I was sure it was garbage.
So was I the last person on earth to learn rust on cast iron is not a death sentence? And how many oven rounds do you all actually do, because I keep seeing numbers from 1 to 6 online.
