Old timer at the Concord diner taught me more than any map

Stopped for a coffee at the Red Blazer last fall and this guy in a flannel saw me staring at a trail map, said 'the best views aren't on that paper, they're off Exit 12 if you know where to look.' He drew a little scribble on a napkin and I still use it to this day. Ever had a local tip that beat any guidebook?

My buddy Mike had the same thing happen up in the Whites. Some old guy at a gas station told him to skip the main trail and follow the old logging road behind the dump. Mike thought he was messing with him. Turns out there's this little pond up there that looks like a mirror at sunrise. He still talks about it and won't tell anyone the exact spot.
