I used a garlic press for 6 years before my sister asked why I wasn't just smashing cloves with a knife
My sister was at my place in Reno helping me cook dinner back in March, and I was pressing cloves one at a time through that little metal tool. She picked up her chef's knife, laid a clove flat, and crushed it in one second, then the skin slid right off. She said "you know that thing is why your hands hurt, right?" Six years of pressing and scrubbing that stupid grid, and a knife does it faster and tastes the same. Do people actually get real use out of a press or was I just stubborn?
The garlic press thing is just one of those. Kitchen gadgets, phone apps, exercise machines, all of it. Somebody sells us a fix for a problem we did not have, and we hang onto it because we spent money. I had a bread maker that sat on the counter for years making one sad loaf a month. My dad still uses a shoehorn when his fingers work fine. The pattern is we trust the tool more than the simple thing our hands already know how to do.
