The 24-hour diner in Tulsa now makes me read menus twice, thanks to a ghost pepper special

Last Tuesday I stopped at Kelly's Diner on Route 66 for my usual late-night patty melt. I skimmed the board and ordered what I thought was a new BBQ burger. Turns out it was a ghost pepper melt, no warning, no tiny pepper icon, nothing. I took one bite and my mouth went full fire alarm for 20 minutes, couldn't even taste my coffee after. Now I ask every waitress if anything on the menu is spicy before I order, even at places like IHOP. Has anyone else gotten blindsided by a menu that doesn't label heat levels?

Did you ever find out if they changed the recipe after that or keep the old one? I got wrecked by a "smoked jalapeno" sauce at a BBQ spot once that was basically pure reaper paste. Now I always peek at the menu online before I go and if there's no heat scale I just order the plainest thing and ask for hot sauce on the side. That way I control the burn instead of it controlling me.
