Got caught in the rain last week on a big driveway pour

We were finishing a 30x40 driveway near Green Bay and the sky opened up about 20 minutes after we screeded. Rain was coming down hard enough to dimple the surface. I grabbed a couple empty 5 gallon buckets and some visqueen we had in the truck, covered the fresh concrete best we could, and waited it out for 15 minutes. Pulled the plastic off slow and careful, then we hit it with a light bullfloat to close up the rain marks. Turned out okay but my heart was pounding the whole time. Anybody else got a rain save story or a better way to handle it?

That rare 90s comic I thought was overpriced turned out to be a steal

I saw a guy at a convention in Portland asking $80 for a beat up copy of X-Men #1 from 1991. I rolled my eyes hard because I figured he was just another flipper trying to cash in. Then he showed me it was a newsstand variant with a printing error on the cover, and I checked eBay later that night. Those are going for like $200 now even in rough shape. Has anyone else had a gut feeling about a book being fake that turned out to be legit?

Hit 200 feet on a single dive and nobody warned me about the paperwork

I finally broke 200 feet on a commercial dive last week off the coast of Port Arthur, and all the safety gear and prep talk I got from training didn't mention the insane amount of surface interval logs I'd have to fill out for insurance. Took me longer to do the paperwork than the actual dive itself, which honestly caught me off guard. Does anyone else feel like the administrative side of deep diving gets way too little attention in the courses?

Boiled eggs finally peel easy after I tried a 12 minute ice bath trick

I always struggled with peeling hard boiled eggs, shells would stick and rip the whites apart. Then I read about dropping them straight into ice water for exactly 12 minutes after boiling, and this morning I peeled 6 eggs in under a minute each. Has anyone else tried a specific timing for this?

That one Wednesday last month when everything actually worked out

Had a day two weeks ago where I got approved for IHSS after waiting 8 months, my SSDI check showed up a day early, and the bus driver let me ride for free when my tap card wouldn't scan. Three good things in one day never happens when you're on disability. Made me suspicious honestly. Anyone else have a day where the system accidentally worked?

Prewashed bagged salad is a scam, one test showed 3x the bacteria of unwashed heads

I read this piece from Cook's Illustrated last month where they tested bagged romaine against whole heads. The prewashed stuff actually had way more bacteria because the washing process just spreads it around in the damp bag. I used to buy the prewashed stuff for convenience but now I just buy whole heads and wash them myself (takes like 2 extra minutes). Has anyone else looked into the actual safety numbers on these bags?

Was swapping out a control board on a 20 year old fridge yesterday

It was a Frigidaire model from like 2004, out in a garage near Minnetonka. I got the new board in, fired it up, and the compressor kicked on but then the whole thing just hummed and clicked off after 30 seconds. Turned out the old capacitor was barely holding a charge and had to swap that too, which I didn't catch at first. Has anyone else had a simple board swap turn into a whole afternoon of chasing secondary failures like that?

Rant: Tried pleating my own fabric for a dress and it came out looking like a crumpled receipt

I spent 4 hours last night hand-pleating some rayon for a summer dress, following a tutorial from some blogger in Seattle. The pleats held for about 30 seconds before the whole thing sagged into a wrinkly mess, and now I'm out 20 bucks in fabric. Anyone else had rayon fight back like this, or did I just pick the wrong material for pleating?

Used to roll my eyes at writing prompts that involved random generators, but a 2 AM session with a "fantasy city name" prompt gave me a fully fleshed out marketplace scene.

I always thought those prompt generators were for people who couldn't come up with their own ideas. But last week I used one for a character name, and it bizarrely led to building a whole backstory about a merchant who trades in forgotten memories. Has anyone else had a random prompt suddenly unlock a whole story for you?
