Bought a $450 solar filter, saved my camera from a crispy end

Was shooting the partial eclipse last month near Denver and almost used my regular telephoto without thinking. A buddy stopped me and lent me his old glass filter until mine arrived. That $450 Thousand Oaks filter felt insane at checkout, but one direct hit on the sensor would've cost way more. Anybody else had a close call with gear during a solar event?

Three grand for a Mark IV sensor replacement is what I quoted myself last year. That filter is basically insurance with a glass window built in, not a luxury. People see the sticker price and forget what a fried sensor actually costs to fix.
