Found out I was welding galvanized wrong for 2 years, burnoff trick changed it

Was at a shop in Phoenix and a guy saw me prepping some brackets, said why are you grinding the zinc off when you can just let the weld burn it first... I always thought you had to clean it down to bare metal, but he showed me how the heat does it if you keep the puddle tight. My welds stopped spitting and look way cleaner now, plus I'm not eating up grinding discs like before. Anyone else have a habit like that where a stranger just casually dropped some knowledge that saved you? what made it click for you?

Try that trick with thin sheet metal and you'll burn right through it, thick stock only.

My uncle spent thirty years doing bodywork and he always said the same thing about thin metal. It's like cooking a steak, high heat on a thin cut just ruins it, but people see one trick work on something thick and assume it applies everywhere. Same with carpentry too, I watch folks use a framing hammer on finish nails and wonder why the wood splits. There's a tool for every thickness, and knowing the difference is half the craft.
