Went back to leaf springs on my old Tacoma after 3 years of coils

I swapped in a full Alcan leaf pack last month thinking it'd be a downgrade. Rides way better on washboard roads and I don't have to worry about bump steer anymore. Has anyone else gone backwards on their suspension setup?

Everyone says tracking every dollar is the only way to win at budgeting

I found a study from the Journal of Consumer Affairs last month that said people who use a rough monthly allowance save just as much as those who log each coffee purchase. That blew my mind because every finance guru I follow preaches penny-by-penny tracking. They had 400 participants over 6 months and the results were nearly identical. Has anyone else stopped micromanaging and still hit their savings goals?

Overheard a pro baker say he sprays his proofing baskets with water before flouring and it's a game changer for sticky dough.

My favorite nesting box finally gave out after 7 seasons

That old wooden nesting box I built back in 2017 finally split right down the side last Tuesday. A hen was sitting in there and the whole thing just collapsed under her... she was not happy about it. I grabbed some scrap plywood from the garage and patched it up temporary, but it's got me thinking about switching to plastic ones. Has anyone else had luck with those molded plastic nesting boxes holding up better than wood?

I used to think mise en place was a waste of time until I worked a brunch shift that broke me.

I always figured I could just grab stuff as I went, like my old mentor did. Then I had a 50-cover brunch last Sunday with 20 different mods and I was drowning. The expo girl calmly said "prep is the recipe, chef" while I was scrambling for chives. Now I spend 15 minutes setting up my station and my ticket times dropped by almost half. Anyone else have a moment where a simple habit just clicked for them?

Took me 3 hours to fix one stupid door lock adjustment

Had this nice Schindler job downtown where the doors were dragging on the sill like crazy. Thought it was just a quick roller swap, 20 minutes tops. Three hours later I'm still messing with the hanger bolts because the track was slightly warped from some old water damage. Finally had to shim the whole damn door panel to get it to sit right. Anyone else run into tracks that look fine but are actually bent?

Heard a lady say she never checks furniture cushions and now I do

Was at a neighborhood yard sale last Saturday and overheard one woman tell her friend she never bothers looking under couch cushions. I used to do the same thing until I bought a beat up recliner for $5 and later found $37 in coins and a gold earring stuffed down in the crack. Now I always flip them over and check every pocket and seam before I buy. Has anyone else found cash or jewelry hidden in old furniture?

Debate: Is landing pipe with connectors faster than bending offsets on big jobs?

I tried pre-making all my conduit sections with couplings instead of bending offsets on this warehouse job last week in Dallas, and it cut my rough-in time by like 2 hours. But my journeyman said I'm sacrificing stability for speed so I'm curious which way you guys go on commercial runs.

Hot take: Roman concrete wasn't better, just different in a way that worked for them

I was reading an article from Archaeology Magazine last night about Roman harbor construction, and it hit me that their concrete wasn't some magic formula. It had lime clasts that actually helped cracks self heal when water got in, but it also took like 10 years to fully cure. Modern Portland cement sets in days but cracks easily. So really they just had way more patience than we do. Has anyone else read about this and felt like the 'ancient secrets' hype is overblown?

I used to think 2FA was just a hassle, and I rolled my eyes every time a site made me use it. But after my own email got hacked back in February 2023 because I reused a password from 2017, I spent a week cleaning up the mess. That one change saved me from having to explain to my dispatch why my trucking app login was compromised. Has anyone else seen their accounts get hit after ignoring this for too long?

The diner on Route 4 that closed last month still haunts me

That line about "big developer bought the land for another storage unit place" really got under my skin lol. It's not even that they're building something useful like housing or a grocery store, it's always storage units or a car wash. I did some digging on my town's planning board site last week and found out our old diner spot was sold for literally half what the neighboring houses go for. These developers know they can sit on the land for years and flip it later, so they throw up something cheap in the meantime. It's like they're just using storage units as a placeholder until the property value jumps high enough for condos. Makes me wonder how many of these places are actually a scam to warehouse empty space instead of giving us back our community hubs.
