I was at the weekly Detroit SOUP event in Eastern Market last month, handing out my plumbing flyer like usual. A guy running a local hardware store just looked at it and said, 'Cool, but what's the one thing you wish more people knew about their pipes?' I told him about how many emergency calls are from people ignoring small leaks. He said, 'See, that's useful. Lead with that.' Now at every event, I ask people, 'What's your biggest headache with your home's water?' It gets way better conversations than my old elevator pitch. Anyone else found a simple question that works better than a sales spiel?

Our group picked 'The Overstory' and I bought the illustrated hardcover thinking the art would help the discussion. Nobody even opened it, we just argued about the characters for an hour. Do you ever feel like the physical book doesn't matter at all in these meetings?

Wasted a full day trying to save $200 on a custom shower door install

Had a job in Phoenix last month where the client wanted a frameless shower door on a wall that was out of plumb by almost an inch. I tried to fudge it with shims and a thicker hinge, thinking I could avoid the cost of a wall repair. Ended up spending 8 hours on site, the door never sat right, and I had to eat the labor and redo the whole wall anyway. Lost the whole day's pay, about $800, and looked bad to the client. Should have just called a drywall guy from the start. Anyone have a good rule for when to just say no to a tricky install?

A runway show in Milan made me rethink my whole approach to color

I was at the Prada show about 5 years ago, and they used this one specific shade of mustard yellow that I would have never picked. It was paired with a deep navy and it just clicked for me. I went home and threw out half my old color palettes because they felt so safe and boring. Has anyone else had a single color change their whole design process?

Showerthought: I bought a $300 digital thermometer that was basically useless for real smoking

Back in 2018, I got this fancy Bluetooth probe set that promised perfect temps from my phone. The app was buggy, lost connection constantly, and the probes gave up after maybe six cooks. Ended up going back to my old $40 ThermoPop for the quick checks and a simple wired probe for the long smokes. Anyone else have a gadget they were sold on that just didn't work out for our kind of cooking?
