Had a chat with a younger painter yesterday that made me think

This 22 year old kid on my crew was talking about how he likes using those color matching cameras for blending. I told him I still mix everything by eye like I learned 15 years ago and he just laughed and said why not use both. He showed me his process writing down the camera numbers but then tweaking the formula himself. It kinda hit me that I've been avoiding that tech for no good reason. Has anyone else had a moment where the new guys taught you something?

Old guys like me still acting like our way is the only way. Last week I spent 20 minutes hand tinting a batch of paint, got it wrong, had to dump it and start over. The kid could have matched it in five minutes with that camera. Makes me feel like a stubborn old mule who refuses to use a trailer.

Man, I was exactly the same way. Used to swear by my gut and my eyes for matching colors, thought those digital tools were just a crutch for people who didn't put in the time. Then I spent three hours on a greige that kept pulling too pink, finally gave in and borrowed the kid's little scanner thing. Nailed it in one shot. Felt like I'd been driving with the parking brake on for years. Still do a lot by hand for the fun of it, but I don't pretend that's the smart way anymore.
