My near-miss with a paint peel taught me to respect the old methods.

In the past, we had no choice but to sand by hand for a perfect finish. Today's orbital sanders save time but can leave hidden swirls. I rushed a job last week and the clear coat lifted after two days. Now I always do a final hand-pass to be sure.

Oh man, I know exactly what you mean. I rushed a sanding job once and had the finish fail after a couple days. Now I always do a final hand-pass to be sure, just like you said. Those orbital sanders are fast but they can leave hidden swirls that mess things up later, lol. Taking that extra time by hand really saves you from having to redo the whole thing.

Read a tip on a woodworking forum about checking your sanding work with a raking light. That side angle shows every hidden swirl before you even touch the finish. Makes that final hand pass way more focused, you know?

Used to think that final hand sand was a waste of time. Figured the machine did good enough. Seeing that clear coat peel up changed my mind fast. Now I won't skip it, the old way just works.
