Unpopular opinion: I was wrong about always using a heat gun to soften body filler before shaping it.
Last Tuesday in my home shop, I was working on a 2008 Ford F-150 quarter panel and the heat gun caused the filler to bubble and separate from the metal, so I had to strip the whole section and redo it with just a fresh mix and hand files, which actually gave me a sharper line. What's your go-to method for tricky filler shaping on older panels?

Ever try shaping filler on a panel that's been in the sun all day? I swear the ambient heat makes it set up weird, almost crumbly. Had that happen on a Chevy door once and just ended up using a cheese grater file straight from the can. Sometimes the simple way is just less hassle, you know?

A cheese grater straight from the can? Man, that's a new one for me. I've seen guys use old hacksaw blades or even a piece of broken glass in a pinch. But pulling a kitchen tool out of the drawer for bodywork is next level. I guess when the filler goes sandy like that, you just grab whatever's gonna cut it. Did it leave weird grooves you had to sand out forever?

Nah, that sounds like a mess waiting to happen lol. A proper body file is cheap and won't leave those deep gouges you gotta fight later. I'd rather spend a few bucks on the right tool than hours fixing weird grooves.
